What is veterinary herbal medicine?
History
Herbs have been used to treat animals and people in many countries for centuries. Animals have even been observed to use specific herbs and other natural products to treat themselves. Some cultures, such as the Chinese and the Indian have cultivated this form of treatment over centuries and have kept it as an integrated part of their medical system up until today. In the Western world, it is back on the rise.

Holistic approach
I work with herbs holistically, i.e. I believe in combining them with traditional medicine in order to achieve the greatest benefit for the patient, taking the whole of the animal and the system in which it lives into account.

Form of herbs
The herbs are given either dried or as tinctures.

Correct use
Even though many of our drugs are originally derived from plants, they are isolated substances, whereas the components within a whole herb interact with one another, enhancing or inhibiting each other's actions depending on the combination. The assumption that herbs are always safe, because they are "natural" is a misconception. If used in the right dosage and for the correct indications, they are safe and very effective, and their side effects tend to be smaller than with drugs. However, there are certain herbs that have to be used with care and that can, when used wrongly, be just as dangerous as commercial drugs.

What kind of problems can be treated?
Herbs can be used to treat or support treatment of most physical or psychological problems, often accompanying traditional medicine. The holistic approach does just that: approach holistically, taking all the possible treatment techniques into consideration and choosing the ones best suited for the individual at that point in time.

What happens during a consultation
A consultation usually lasts about 1 hour to 1.5 hours and mainly consists of getting as full a picture as possible of your animal and the situation in which it lives by questioning, listening, observing and examinating the animal.

The herbal treatments are mixed by a separate pharmacy or clinic based on the individual prescription sent to them for your animal.

What do I need to do to arrange for a consultation?
Please contact me by email or phone to arrange for a consultation. Depending on the problem and the location, the consultation will be held either in the practice or at the pet's home.

Because of possible links of behaviour problems with physical problems, I might ask you to take your animal to your vet and have it checked before the behaviour consultation.

If you have any questions, please do no hesitate to contact me by telephone or email

VHM_Santa Catalina How many consultations will I need to come to?
How many consultations are necessary depends on the type of problem and how things progress over the first few weeks after the initial consultation. Usually, the first prescription is made up for two weeks. Often, as the animal progresses, it will be necessary to adapt the herbs to its current state.

The most divine art is that of healing. It must occupy itself with the soul as well as the body.
