What is Bowen Technique?
|
Origin
The
Bowen Technique was
developed by Mr Tom Bowen in Australia in the last century.
The
Bowen move
The Bowen Technique is a holistic approach to
healing, i.e. not the
problem is treated per se, but the person is treated as a whole. The
philosophy is to work WITH the person and his/her body, relying on the
person to give the practitioner feedback on how he/she is feeling . It
is a very gentle manual technique of treating, not really comparable to
anything else. The moves consist of a very gentle role over soft
tissues (muscles, tendons, connective tissue and fascia) using only
very gentle pressure, agreed upon by both the patient and the
practitioner. These moves are placed at specific points of high tension
or importance on the body. As opposed to other techniques, this
technique does not force anything onto the patient, it is a
collaboration and communication throughout the treatment, input is
offered to the body and the body is left to integrate this and
stimulated to heal itself.
Time
The Bowen Technique is a very calm and quiet
technique with many pauses
between moves, which allow the input received by the body to sink in,
and the body to react to and integrate it. This reaction might occur
immediately or take a few days.
Possible
reactions
It can occur that
older lesions flare up again or
that problems
initially get worse. Even though this might be uncomfortable for the
patient, it is a sign that something is happening and the body working
on itself. The situation usually gets better within a few
days.

What kind of problems can be treated?
|
The
Bowen Technique can be
used preventatively as well as therapeutically. Due to its holistic
nature, it can be applied in almost any situation with a few
exceptions. As with any type of therapy, there are some dogs who love
it and cannot get enough of it and others who do not feel in tune with
it. As this technique is based on mutuality, the treatment will not be
forced on any animals who do not feel comfortable with it.

What happens during a treatment?
|
Location
Ideally,
the
treatment should take place in a quiet surrounding with the patient as
relaxed as possible. Depending on the patient`s abilities and on the
moves the practitioner chooses to use, the patient is lying, sitting or
standing.
Rest
Even though the method is very gentle, the body will
be receiving a lot
of input and needs rest to integrate what it has experienced. Hence it
is important that no more strenuous activities are planned for the same
day if possible.
Less
is more
Even though we treat the individual as a whole, the
gentle, rolling
moves are placed at specific points in the body. As Bowen basically
gives the body impulses to then work on its own, a lot of the time
consists of pauses, letting the body integrate the information it has
received. We have to take into consideration, the patient`s lifestyle,
general condition and constitution and respect how the patient`s body
reacts. Hence, it can happen that a whole treatment consists only of
one or two moves. This might be a difficult concept to grasp in our
world full of hectic and quantity, however, the quality here is “less
is more”. As we never force anything onto the body with Bowen, it might
take some people several sessions to feel comfortable enough with the
moves. It is important that patient and practitioner communicate openly.

After treatment recommendations
|
Water
A Bowen treatment influences
the body’s blood and lymph circulation, which rely greatly on water. It
is generally important to drink enough water in every day life, and
especially so after a Bowen treatment.
Walk
On the day of a treatment,
please try not to sit for longer than half an hour at a time. This does
not mean you have to walk around all day, but just get up, stretch and
take a few steps if you have to sit during longer periods at a time.
The idea behind this is to avoid any stiffness or soreness as far as
possible, and to support blood and lymph circulation through the body.
If your treatment is in the evening, you of course may sleep through
the night and don’t need to get up every half hour.
Treatment intervals
Treatments are recommended in intervals of 5-10 days, depending on the
situation, the patient and how things develop after every treatment.

|
Is the Bowen Technique with other types of treatments?
|
No: As the Bowen Technique is a
manual
technique, it is best not to combine it with any other physical
methods, such as physiotherapy, massage, acupuncture, etc.
Yes: The Bowen Technique does,
however,
combine very well with therapies that use other modalities, such as
conventional medicine, homeopathy, herbal medicine, aromatherapy, etc.
